Why is the Honda Ridgeline not good off-road?

It’s no secret that the Honda Ridgeline has never really been the most popular mid-size truck. And this despite the fact that critics and journalists seem to constantly praise this pickup. Although the 2022 Ridgeline comes with a standard V6 and all-wheel drive, it seems like that’s not enough for most truck buyers. Especially those who want to take their van on the road less travelled.

Can you go off-road in a 2022 Honda Ridgeline?

In terms of off-road capability, the 2022 Ridgeline isn’t the best. It has unibody construction and lacks features such as a locking differential found in other mid-size trucks. Now, the 2022 Ridgeline is equipped with all-wheel drive. And that should help it handle some light off-road tasks.

Unfortunately, all-wheel drive means this midsize truck doesn’t have a more capable four-wheel-drive system. But, you should be able to do things like drive on a beach quite easily.

What type of engine does the 2022 Ridgeline have?

Under the hood of every Honda Ridgeline is a 3.5-liter V6 engine. This powertrain develops 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. And while it’s nice that Honda makes stock six-cylinders, it doesn’t seem like that convinced buyers to buy its pickup.

Most other midsize trucks will charge you extra for a V6, but that’s not the case with the Ridgeline. And Car and Driver notes that this pickup offers smooth power delivery. And that’s not always the case when it comes to trucks.

Something that also helps the 2022 Ridgeline have a comfortable ride is its coil-over independent rear suspension. This makes the Ridgeline behave more like a car than a truck.

How much does the Honda Ridgeline cost?

The Ridgeline is not necessarily a cheap truck. Its MSRP starts at around $40,000. If you are interested in purchasing this truck, a variety of trim levels are offered. The best combination of value and features might be the RTL trim.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline RTL comes with heated seats, leather interior and power front seats. Because of this, it feels more premium than the base Sport model.

Why is the Ridgeline not selling well?

There are probably several factors that keep the Ridgeline from being a popular truck. While its unibody construction makes it comfortable, most truck owners appreciate the road-connected feel of a body-on-frame vehicle. Plus, the Ridgeline lacks serious off-road chop. And even for those whose truck will never see a trail, the off-road capability is something to appreciate.

The other factor is price. On other midsize trucks like the 2022 Nissan Frontier, $40,000 gets you quite a truckload. It seems the Ridgeline’s price may be too high for its own good. Even on the used market, the Ridgeline can be quite expensive. But, even though the Ridgeline isn’t selling well, it’s still there. And for the right buyer, it could be the perfect pickup.
